11.6 Shrines

Shrines are extensions of your cult or sect that allow you to expand the influence of your organization with the help of powerful relics.
Members of a cult or sect can build a shrine and use it to house relics. Relics grant powers to the shrine. Each shrine can hold 3 relics. The combination of relics allow for different combinations of powers.

For more information on relics, how to use them with shrines, and their specific powers, read HELP RELICS.

Commands
---------------------------------

CONSTRUCT SHRINE
The command to build a shrine is CONSTRUCT SHRINE. It takes about 60 seconds to build the shrine and you cannot be interrupted while doing it or the process will stop.

Constructing a shrine costs: 50 obsidian, 10 wood, and 10 glass. It also consumes belief. The amount of belief starts at 30% for a shrine within 3 rooms of another level 3 shrine and increases up to 90% belief for a shrine 15 rooms (or greater if you have an idol stone) rooms away. Look for the Five Tributes to collect idol stones. They hang out in the shadows of certain common rooms in the cities and listen for those who speak ill of Urzog.

When completed, a shrine will be level 1 and have a faith level of 50%. You can now begin to sanctify or defile the shrine to increase or decrease the faith. See the commands before for a more detailed explanation.

Shrines have five stats: Level, Faith, Blood, Spirit, and Virtue.

Shrine level ranges from 1 to 4 and is determined by the amount of blood, spirit, and virtue fortified into the shrine. A shrine increases in level for every 100 points of blood, spirit, and virtue. A shrine fortified with 125 points of blood, 50 points of virtue, and 25 points of spirit would be level 3. Read the SHRINE FORTIFY command below for more information.

Level 1: No benefit.
Level 2: Relics will work.
Level 3: New shrines can be built within 3 rooms of this shrine.
Level 4: Harder to defile shrines.

If a shrine is under 25% faith it will slowly decay blood, virtue, and spirit points.
Shrines have a small daily upkeep in the form of cult or sect belief. If there is no belief remaining, shrines will decay faith. If a shrine reaches 0 faith, it is destroyed.

CONSTRUCT IDOL
An idol is essentially a shrine that is constructed more than 15 rooms from another level 3 shrine. It requires 90% belief, an idol stone, and the normal shrine commodities. Once built, it functions like a normal shrine, but cannot be defiled until all nearby shrines are destroyed. Note that because idols can be constructed anywhere on the main continent, you may have areas with overlapping shrines. Although shrines cannot be built in the same room, opposing shrines close to each other increase the daily belief cost and make defiling easier.

SHRINE SANCTIFY
This will increase the faith level of the shrine by 15%. The cost for sanctifying a shrine is 30% of your faith and a small amount of belief. A shrine that is under 25% faith will slowly lose blood, virtue, and spirit points. A shrine can only be sanctified or defiled once every 5 hours, however, there is a short 15 minute window after which a shrine is defiled during which it may be sanctified again. This window gets progressively smaller as the shrine is defiled and sanctified back and forth. Those with the perceptions skill VIEWSHRINE will be able to see this window.

SHRINE DEFILE
This will decrease the faith level of the shrine by varying amounts. The cost for defiling a shrine is 30% of your faith and a small amount of belief. A shrine that is under 25% faith will slowly lose blood, virtue, and spirit points. A shrine at 0% will be destroyed. The amount a shrine will be defiled depends on: the number a distance of sect shrines within 15 rooms, the number and distance of non-sect shrines within 15 rooms, the Aegis relic, and whether the shrine is level 4. In addition, some shrines cannot be defiled at all. Shrines built with an idol stone (Idols) cannot be defiled if another cult shrine is within 15 rooms. In addition, shrines that have a large number of same-cult shrines nearby may become immune according to the following formula. For each shrine within 3 rooms take the shrine level and multiply it by 4 minus the shrine distance. For same-cult shrines add this number, for non-same-cult shrines, subtract it. For example a level four shrine one room away is (4-1)*4 = 12 points. An opposing level four shrine 3 rooms away is worth -(4-3)*4 = -4 points. A shrine with a total score of 24 or more is immune from defiling.

A shrine can only be sanctified or defiled once every 5 hours, however there is a short 15 minute window after a shrine is sanctified during which it may be defiled again. This window gets progressively smaller as the shrine is defiled and sanctified back and forth.

DECONSTRUCT SHRINE
Leaders of the organizations can now remove shrines. This will cost 30% belief and will remove all relics that might be in the shrine.

DEATHS IN A SHRINE ROOM
Deaths in a shrine room DO NOT count towards a defile or sanctify. They do, however, give more belief than deaths outside of shrine rooms.

SHRINE FORTIFY WITH <#> <commodity>
There are three types of items used to fortify a shrine.

Item Gained
-----------------------------------------------
a drop of blood Earning PK XP
a drop of spiritual essence Earning Bashing XP
a drop of virtue Earning Quest XP

These items are gained in exchange for earning experience. This means you make a conscious decision to not gain some portion of XP in exchange for finding these items. You can set the percentage of experience you want to exchange with the CONFIG COMMODITIES command.

The more the a shrine is fortified in one specific comm, the less effective that comm type becomes for future fortification. For example, the first blood comm adds 10 points, the second adds 4 points, the third adds 3 points, and so on. In terms of comms, the most efficient way to fully fortify a shrine is with 100 points of each item. However, a shrine can be fully fortified using only one type of comm. This is useful for those players that only like to participate in one or two of the three activities.

VIEWSHRINE
This is a high end, perception based skill. It will display detailed information about any shrine in the room with you.

See HELP RELICS for the command and powers for using relics.
