The climax of the Year of Nightmares

As the mortal realm descended into chaos due to its very night horrors
manifesting into flesh, many sought valiantly to raise shrines to the
Creator as gifted them by Him in the hope they would somehow help repair
the shredded Rashirmir. To their surprise, they found that the
fully-sanctified shrines would grow and become shining, translucent
megaliths which arched towards the sky, unable to be further offered to.
Many suggested that they were some form of metaphysical suture, knitting
the ribbons of the Barrier back into its form whole glory, but as the
megaliths began to cloud and darken, eventually taking on a black,
twisted form, the lands scholars noted the reducing frequency of
nightmare manifestations, and discovered that the great structures were
instead absorbing the very essences of the nightmares, trapping them
within for some unknown purpose.

Eventually, it was discovered that touching the surface of the twisted
megaliths allowed access to a distorted, dream-like place, wherein
mortals of all strengths could battle the darkest nightmares equally in
groups. Many proceeded to do so, even as others continued to raise
shrines, and with each victory within the Dreamheart, the megaliths were
consumed by scarlet fire which destroyed the nightmares within along
with the megalith, obliterating the darkness they absorbed. For many
months this continued, mortals slowly but surely draining away and
destroying the nightmares as people began to be able to sleep
peacefully, although still some nightmares haunted them as others became
real. Clearly, whilst the battles proceeded, the war against the
Nightmares had not yet been won, though the tide was slowly turning in
favour of mortal kind.

Finally, those strongest mortals found that not even they were again
able to raise shrines to the Creator, their abilities to do so strangely
removed as subtly as they were granted, and so they concentrated on
raising and consecrating the remaining shrines into the forms of
megaliths, chief among them was Avkorr Verruil whom was responsible
for raising many shrines, from dormancy to fulfilment. As the final
shrine became a megalith, all of them thrummed with power before
crumbling to dust as at that final structure, a great miasma of pure
darkness began to spill out, manifesting into a great, towering form of
absolute horror, its very nature threatening to break any whom looked
upon it for it embodied the epitome of all mortal fear and nightmare.

The shadow-bound Nightspawn proceeded to rage and ravage across the
land, destroying all in its path in the things mindless, endless
appetite for destruction. Mortal after mortal fell to its great, twisted
attacks, its power mighty for its perverse nature as the very greatest
Nightmare gave it strength unheard of upon the material realm before.
Finally, a great group was gathered from many walks of life by
Moriaquinn Kei'daan, amongst them Hastings, Giselle, Corthono, Marcas,
Azrel, Jenna, Ellia, Velrouth, Nuada, Dantesto, Saikyo, Alaron,
Airamaya, Ivan, Laila, Sorat, Kshatriya, Hubert, Moriana, Ristani,
Jarriel, Youko, Laila, Smeff and several others, whom waged a great and
mighty battle against the creature, several dying numerous times only to
continue the fight until, finally, Sir Sorat Tellaris's blades landed
the final blow, and the foul Nightspawn was slain upon the Vardarian
Highlands.

In its place, a great megalith of pure, translucent crystal rose from
the earth, undefiled by the nightmares, and was soon enveloped in an arc
of pure, radiant light as a figure could be seen descending from the
heavens on prismatic wings of light. The Herald of Lord Avasyu stepped
upon the land, and congratulated all those present on working so hard
during the Year of Nightmares, the essence gathered from both offerings
and defilements of His shrines channelled into those that became
Megaliths, enabling them to drain off the nightmares that were causing
such imbalance, and allowing the Rashirmir to heal. With the death of
the last, greatest of the shadow creatures, the barrier was once more
whole, and the Herald promised that those whom had worked their hardest
would be rewarded in some future fashion, before it ascended once more
into the skies, accompanied by music of such exquisite perfection that
many were moved to tears.

Mortal kind could once again return to their own ways, secure in the
knowledge that they could sleep peacefully again, this greatest threat
against them sealed away by the final Megalith that would stand as a
testament to the great war they had won.

Penned by my hand on the 17th of Tenebrae, in the year 489 AD.
