The Dangers of Demonology

In the spirit of tolerance and acceptance, for the past few years
Kinsarmar, city of the Arts, has been growing more open to of the
magicks of the Noctusari, allowing them to become citizens and bring
their demonic servants into the city. Some notable voices have been
against this, but the majority of the city decided to grant a fair
chance to the Noctu who were conditionally welcomed, if they were
individually accepted by city referendum.

Permits were drawn up, allowing those Noctusari citizens who possessed
them to bring their demons into the city, and for a time there seemed to
be little problem with the system. Encouraged by this, Trent, a
well-respected citizen and mage, decided it was time to study the demons
and how they could be best controlled and put to altruistic use for the
city. To this end, Trent joined the Noctusari and begins a thorough and
deep investigation into the demonic powers. Yet demons are fickle and
powerful creatures, and Trent, going too far into the darker side of
Magick, becomes possessed by a powerful demonic entity, who manifests
and gains control of him during times of violence, whether his own or
that of those around him.

Several allies of his within the forest attempted to rid him of his
cursed possession, among them Nyeire and Cylene who valiantly tried to
aid him, along with the assistance of several Clerics experienced in
banishing demons. Yet despite their best efforts, Trent remained
possessed by a demon who now flew into a possessive rage at the mere
sight of a Cleric. Kinsarmar bore the brunt of the rampaging
demon-controlled Trent, who caused much destruction even as he attempted
to banish the entity from him. Eventually, at his own request during a
rare lucid moment, Trent was slain by Morgain and Syrius as he further
fought for his soul.

For a time, it seemed as if this had been successful as the demon did
not manifest further and Trent stated he felt whole once more, yet
worryingly his words written upon the cities boards indicated that
things had not gone as well as believed. Shortly afterwards, Aranel and
Mathyew, both well-loved and important citizens of Kinsarmar, were
discovered to be missing with no word of them being attacked or slain.
Around this time, many noticed the air grow suddenly hot, as the skies
flickered crimson, but put it down to strange weather as the effect
quickly faded. Observant citizens noticed Trent had been hiring guards,
who were noticed following him around Kinsarmar, and several made
connection between that and the missing citizens. Trent quickly called
for a meeting of the city, to explain everything that was occurring, as
Aranel and Mathyew reassured the city via its own telepathic connection.

The cautions of various city leaders, including Rowyn and Peora,
resulted in only a few attending the sudden meeting, during which Trent
claimed that Aranel, with the help of Mathyew and a few city guards,
could perform a rite to destroy the possessing demon. This was met with
little belief or trust at this point, and Trent fled, the guards
following him, with Rowyn and Peora in hot pursuit. Using some manner of
unknown power, the Demonic Trent created a portal to the Noctusari Lair,
fast followed by the pair before the portal closed. Finding themselves
in a torture chamber, with Aranel and Mathyew chained and shackled, they
pleaded with Trent to resist the demon. He tried to struggle once more,
yet was unable to gain control as his body shuddered and mutated into a
hideous demonic form. Using his power over the guards, he commanded the
guards to attack the pair, who fought valiantly but fell under superior
numbers.

Acting quickly, Lyrith, one of the principle voices against the presence
of demons and the acceptance of the Noctusari, removed Trent from the
city, along with all other Noctusari members, and declared Trent an
enemy of Kinsarmar. Without the caution of the Council, and the quick
reactions of Lyrith, what might have befallen the city and its citizens
does not bear thinking about. However, Aranel and Mathyew were still
held captive, but with the last of her strength, Aranel managed to
nullify the portal-blocking sigil in the chamber, allowing a rapidly
assembled rescue force to raid the Lair. Unexpectedly coming up against
the Singularity of the Noctusari, Lidara, as well as Trent and several
other demon-controlled individuals, the rescue party fought bravely,
holding their own, but finally Lidara managed call upon a pact with
Jy'Barrak Golgotha, Emperor of Darkness, and summon the hideous Pit. As
the party were one-by-one sucked into the infernal regions, the demonic
cackling echoed in their ears as the demons planned what to do to their
hostages. Yet the use of the Pit seemed to backfire, as both Aranel and
Mathyew were both drawn in as well, escaping their captors after a
fashion, though at the cost of their lives. Aranel, whose experience and
power allowed her to travel with rapidity through Dis and return
restored to Kinsarmar, further used the remnants of her power to restore
Mathyew to life.

As things now stand, Kinsarmar's citizens are safe within the city, and
are once again rabidly against both the Noctusari and the use of
Demonology, as well as Dark Magick as a whole. The fate of Trent,
perhaps the innocent victim of foul magicks born of good intentions,
remains to be seen. Whilst a spark of his own soul and individuality
remains within his body, the demon presence is strong and seems to only
grow stronger as it uses Trent's power with its own. What occurs next
may depend both upon the true Trent, and upon his former friends...
